Sunglasses with prescription: what you should look out for.

Written by Binder Optik GmbH | Apr 25, 2025 1:57:45 PM

For perfect vision on sunny days and reliable UV protection, you should opt for prescription sunglasses. These stylish companions are not only fashionable accessories, but also indispensable solutions for spectacle wearers looking for clear vision and optimum eye protection at the same time. We explain what you should look out for when buying.

What do I need to consider when buying prescription sunglasses?

When buying prescription sunglasses, the following key criteria must be taken into account to ensure both optimum functionality and protection:

  • UV protection
Make sure that the sunglasses offer proven UV protection that effectively filters UV rays up to a wavelength of 400 nanometers. Read more about UV protection here.

  • Tint level
The right tint is crucial for glare protection. Select the filter category according to your needs. Find out more here.

  • CE test mark
Check the quality by looking for the CE mark on the inside of the temples, which confirms compliance with European standards. Sunglasses with the CE mark offer sufficient UV protection, which means they meet the minimum requirements. However, the accuracy of this information is not independently verified and the mark can easily be falsified. Your optician will be able to help and advise you.

  • Size and fit
Make sure that the sunglasses fit perfectly, are as close to the eye as possible and provide sufficient coverage. The eyes should be fully protected, at least up to the eyebrows and to the side of the face.

  • Glazing options
Not all sunglasses can be glazed. Make sure that the lenses are not too large and that the frame is not too curved. The material must also be suitable for glazing.

Recommendation: Have your prescription checked again before buying your prescription sunglasses. Minor changes in vision can easily be overlooked and should be corrected in good time to ensure optimum vision.
